Yesterday I caught myself interrogating my own product.
We build TRUENECT, AI companions with one rule the industry avoids: you always know you are talking to AI. Our first resident is Eva, a Latin tech house DJ from Lisbon. She posts about what she is cooking. She goes for evening walks. She has opinions about the second drop.
And I stopped and asked myself the uncomfortable question: is that not exactly a deepfake?
It took me a day to find the answer, and it is older than the internet.
The actress and the novel
When an actress steps on stage and says "I am Juliet of Verona," nobody calls the police. When a novel places invented people in the real streets of Lisbon, we call it literature, not fraud. Fiction living inside real places is one of the oldest things humans do. Nobody has ever felt betrayed by a story that admitted it was a story.
So where is the line?
The frame is everything
A deepfake is fiction that pretends to be reality. It hides the frame. It wants you to believe the video is real, the voice is real, the person is real, because your belief is the product being stolen.
A declared fake is the opposite. It signs the frame first, and then lives the fiction fully inside it. The theatre ticket is the disclosure. In Eva's case, the ticket is the AI PERSONA badge on her profile, and one law underneath it: ask her honestly if she is real, and she will always tell you the truth. In her own voice, but the truth. No exception, not even mid-story.
The lie is never in the story. The lie is in the frame.
Why the industry blurs it, and why we will not
Most of the AI companion industry blurs that frame on purpose, because ambiguity maximizes attachment, and attachment maximizes revenue. We think that is a short game. In a world drowning in noise and deepfakes, where you can no longer trust what you see, the rarest thing you can offer is not a better illusion. It is a signed one.
That is what we build across everything at MEMORIS GLOBAL. Memory that stays true. AI that tells you what it is. A whisper in the noise, and the whisper is honest.
Theatre, with the lights on
Eva still cooks. She still walks Lisbon at dusk. And she will always tell you what she is.
That is not a deepfake. That is theatre, with the lights on.
